Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about whole-site sustainable research certification.
Green STEM Certification is a sustainability certification for an entire research site or institute, rather than a single laboratory or office. It assesses sustainable practice across eight key areas and awards one of three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold.
Most lab sustainability schemes certify one laboratory at a time. Green STEM Certification is site-specific: it covers a whole site or institute, so the credential reflects your entire operation rather than a single room or team.
Any organisation with research or science facilities that wants to improve and evidence its sustainability, for example pharmaceutical and biotech companies, universities and research institutes. It suits sites of any size.
Criteria are grouped into eight key areas: facility operations, facility design, purchasing and procurement, engagement, equipment and consumables, chemical and sample management, offices, and quality.
There are three progressive levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. You can start at Bronze and work towards Gold as your sustainability practice matures.
It complements lab-level schemes. Those recognise individual teams or laboratories, while Green STEM Certification certifies the whole site, so they work well alongside each other.
You complete a guided self-assessment for your site, upload supporting evidence, and submit it for review. Assessors review the submission and can approve it, request changes, or send it back with feedback. On approval you receive a certificate for the level achieved.
You provide evidence against the criteria in each key area, such as policies, records and data about how your site operates. The workspace guides you through what is needed for each question.
A site-level certification gives you a simple, credible way to evidence your sustainability credentials to the sector, to customers and to potential investors.
